Hi! The auto choke mechanism will be a bi-metallic strip in a capsule heated by water from the cooling system. The idea is that when the water is up to temperature, the choke can kick off. Potential problems with this method are that it presupposes that the bimetallic strip doesn't get damaged, possibly by overheating, and secondly that the cooling system must be working exactly as the Peugeot Gods decreed. If, for example, someone has left out the thermostat, then you will be in trouble as the choke will run longer cos the engine will take longer to warm up, possibly never hitting operation temp depending on your typical journey. This system of water temp actuated chokes is infamous for causing problems in Ford engines and almost any other place where found. Frequently, it is simpler just to remove it outright and replace it with something like one of www.gowerlee.dircon.co.uk/Accessories.html#Man%20chokes which basically give you a manual choke to adjust the old fashioned way and a cunning set of little metal pipes and jubilee clips to join the hoses together and thus recomplete your cooling sysstem after pulling the autochoke unit out. The conversions are usually very easy to fit. They do need to be a bit specific so as to fit the carb you have, so take advice. If you have a local carb specialist they'd be a good place to start enquiring. Last one I bought was about £25 or so, and was all made out of metal - the plastic kits ar echeaper but wear much faster...

Thank you for that.I have already spoken to gower lee who said that they could not help as carb is well known problem area and they dont carry the stock. The car is in really good condition apart from the carburretor..but getting the carb sorted is a nightmare....I think i really need a reconditioned one as the car was left standing for 2years and the problem appears to stem from this,,,its just a guess thats its auto choke problems as it a pain to start...once it gets going its fine but drinks fuel!Thank you for your interest...any other ideas?

Have a look at changing the carb type. There's a handy list of Peugeot engine codes on the main cpuk website that lists carbs as well as engines for loads of pugs. You may find that the engine your car has was also fitted to a different model but with a with a different and less troublesome type of webber carb so a swap should be easy.
