Hello,
I have a 1992 205 GRDT, with the XUD7T engine, which has developed a rather odd fault.
It developed a coolant leak a couple of weeks ago, which was traced to a faulty water pump which was replaced. The garage then ran it for an hour and found no trace of a leak.
Overnight it dropped a modest amount of coolant on the garage floor, and continued to drop varying amounts of coolant for a week or so. Some days it was a little or none, and some days it was 1 litre+. The journeys were all of a comparable time and distance (approx 20mins in a combination of stop-start traffic and 30/40mph).
The leak appears to be coming from behind the engine block, and the garage has suggested that the oil cooler may be leaking and need replacement. I have been unable to find an oil cooler for the Turbo variant of this engine, only for the standard XUD7.
About two weeks ago, it stopped leaking apart from the very smallest of drops every few days. That was until yesterday when it started to leak once again. I can think of nothing that was done differently to the car to trigger the leak, except one thing:
When I previously filled the system, two weeks ago, the reservoir was filled almost to the top, and then closed. I didn't touch the cap or even open the bonnet (as it didn't seem to be leaking) until on Saturday night I opened the coolant filler cap to check the level. It had dropped a small amount in the two weeks but nothing compared to the previous leak rate. Subsequently on Sunday the level dropped about 1/3 and coolant could be seen raining from the chassis. I filled it up again and it has continued to leak today.
Of course this could be a coincidence, but does it not seem odd that it should start dropping the day after I open the filler cap?!
I have a couple of questions really:
1) Are there any other components of the cooling system in this location (just behind the engine block, offside) which might be the culprit?
2) Would the oil cooler for an XUD7 be compatible with the turbo engine? I presume not or it would be listed under the T as well as the standard)
3) Do you have any suggestions about where I might find a replacement oil cooler?
4) Is there some very odd way in which closing the reservoir cap in a certain way would prevent the leak (maybe high/low pressure or something?)
It seems odd that the amount dropped can be so variable for almost identical engine conditions!
Any questions please shoot, my mechanical knowledge is...average!
