Hi. I love old cars and this lady had this car sitting on the driveway doing nothing for 3 years and was going to scrap it, lucky I got wind of this and managed to buy it off her. Its a 505 2.5 turbodiesel automatic estate. Its got 165,000 miles on the clock. I put a new battery on it and it fired up instantly, as if it had been started 3 minutes ago, not 3 years. Car has some issues such as no brakes (still has fluid in the master cyl) and has some electrical woes such as no hazzards/indicators and the headlamp glass is falling off one side but the car on the whole looks mendable. I drive a 405 TD Estate as a daily which is small in comparison to this 7 seater monster. There seems to be hardly any of these cars around which makes me want to get it back on the road but I'm a bit worried I won't be able to find parts easily. Despite no brakes I have driven the car down the (private) road and the transmission and steering etc seem to work fine. Car has heated seats, electric aerial and central locking etc. Tacho doesn't work and fuel gauge flickers about but I can worry about those later. Anyone know if the master cylinder would be the same on another model?

Don't worry too much about finding parts, most are readily available either at Peugeot or at various parts suppliers. Some are common with 504 and 604 (engine parts, brake parts, etc.) some with other 05 series like the 305 (for instance: roof light, door handles, switches, etc.)
Brakes are easy to fix. If it is discs all around, then the rear are the same as 504s and 604s; I'm not sure about the front, but a 505 Haynes manual should tell you all. Discs, pads and calipers are available, although calipers aren't always cheap (£150/unit). If you find that the brakes have stuck, then it's not difficult to fix them yourself: it's usually a simple matter of getting the caliper off the car, cleaning the pistons + cylinder and fit new seals in and around the piston cylinder. I've done it last summer on my 504 and I'm no mechanic...
The Quinton Hazell catalogue (available online) should be able to tell you which servo + master cylinder fits your 505 (there are single and double circuits on 504s, 505s and 604s).
The good thing on these cars is that they remain fairly modern without the complicated/fancy electronics, so you can actually work on these yourself without the expense of the Peugeot computer!
Good luck and happy motoring in your 505.

Thanks. Its drums on the rear (live axle with torque tube setup) I'm no stranger to rebuilding a brake caliper. I've got a big tub of that red rubber grease standing by. I see there is a guy on French Ebay selling caliper seal kits.
Master cylinder is dual circuit. (two pipes coming out for front circuit and one for rear by the look of it) I bled the master cylinder today and it is actullly pumping fluid and I do have some sort of brakes now (but pedal sinks) more investigation required.
What would happen if I got it on the road and needed say, an exhaust or a windscreen?

Nice one! Try David Freeman near Swindon. 01793 434556 He dismantles 505s and sends the parts to Africa. If it has been standing for three years you would be well advised to replace all the brake pipes. They can corrode badly and leak. Regards, Donaldiesel

THanks yes i expect most of hte 505s are in africa. I sometimes sell Nissans for export etc. Fitted new front pads today, calipers move ok so that's a bonus. Bled the calipers and have got some brakes now. Looks like someone already replaced all the brake pipes. Fixed the indicators and sidelamps.
Got problems with the rear electric window switches, they are loose and operate by themsleves sometimes (not ideal!) and the shutoff button on the dash is not working either (wonder if thats the same on any other models?)
How many people on here own a 505 like mine then?

Good news. Car needed no parts apart from a fanbelt and a set of brake pads to get it functioning again. Rest was cleaning bulbholders and that sort of stuff. Car passed its mot today! Now do I keep this or my 405? Hmmm. Wonder what the 505 would be worth? Anyone?

Don't spose anyone knows if the rear window switches are the same on any other models? they have gone very slack and the windows tend to operate by themselves sometimes! Thanks
