You have a series 1 305. Very rare now. This was designed with a narrow engine bay to take the XL/XR series engines with the gearbox in the sump underneath the engine. Just like the 304. The XU engines fitted to later series 2 305's have the gearbox on the end of the engine, and the much wider unit will not fit the earlier car. I think the XR engine was the last type made by Peugeot with the gearbox underneath, so unless you are in to major structural changes to the body shell, this is as good as it gets.
The standard 1472cc XR engine gave 74bhp. There was an 'S' version with electronic ignition and twin choke carb which gave 89bhp, so perhaps rebuilding and tuning your existing engine is the way forward. Note that the series 1 305 has more in common with 04 series cars than 05, so you may get more help on the 04 forum. Good luck, Donaldiesel
