if you go to the dealer they can get you a set cut from the key number, as its a 2000 model year then it should be on record. they can then program them

Oh dear.
3 options:
1) Find the keys.
2) Buy a new car.
3) Speak to the dealers, or a specialist automotive locksmith about getting some more cut/programmed.
PS, what's a 1.4 engine doing in a 406?

Neither main dealer, local peugeot specialist or autolocksmith seem to know/be able to find out if there is a transponder fitted. There seem to be some electronics in the ceiling near the electric sunroof under a plastic cover that looks like an infrared receiver. Would this be an early type of transponder and if so do I need a code to programme the key- in which case how would I get it as main dealer can't. For example Is there a diagnostics point an auto-locksmith could plug into or could it be disabled? Thanks Jay Bristol

Thanks Jay Bristol Old 405`s do not have a transponder. The part in the roof by the interior light is the receiver for the key blip.It activates and deactivates the alarm as well as operating the central locking. There should be a label stuck inside the unit with its code number. You will need this number when ordering a new blip.Mind you as its an old 405 I`m not sure if anything is still available?? All I would do is try and get a key to fit the ignition.Or replace the ignition/steering lock (very difficult without the original key!!)then see if the car starts? if it does no need to worry about alarms or C/L.

Thanks for that - its really useful. I've taken the plastic cover off for the infrared console but can't see a code. Do I have to take the unit out to find the label?

Its many years since, but if I remember once the interior light surround has been removed and its all exposed you will find it? is there a black cover over the printed circuit? you are looking for a white stick on label.

I didn't see how to remove interior light easily but managed to prise off black plastic cover to circuits but couldn't see a white sticker obviously so thought maybe had to take out the whole unit or something? On the earlier subject of transponders I have noticed in the past that sometimes I'm in the car and the ignition is still immobilised and I have to 'blip' the roof sensor to get ignition. Can that still tally with the idea there isn't a transponder and maybe I just locked myself in or something like that?
Thanks

As I said its many years since I had any thing to do with these old 404`s.All i can remember was that you had to rely on the key fob working properly to disarm the alarm system. If you just unlocked the door manually you had the siren going and the h/lamps flashing. The fob was very fragile and the circuit board in the roof used to get contaminated with water if the car had a roof aerial. Most people found ways to do away with the alarm and lock the doors manually. Remember that code label was stuck on 20years ago!! chances are its fallen off? been pulled off and used? etc etc.

Hello again. Yes what you say sounds absolutely correct - having broken into the car the alarms go off etc.(although they do stop after a while) - but wouldn't this mean if I got a basic key cut with the code from Peugeot that I still wouldn't be able to start the engine unless I somehow found a way to deactivate the alarms first?
Thanks

Thinks hard.......I have a feeling it wont start with the alarm going off? there should be a deactivator situated in the engine bay?? it looks like a door lock and you just turn the key.Don`t tell me,...that was lost as well?? All this is getting nowhere, time to experiment.Get a key blade cut and see if it starts?? if it does rip out the siren which is inside the N/S/F wing, you may need an auto electrician to do it properly as I think the head lights flash as well.?? Mind you I have to say this,no offense.. is a 92 405 worth all this hassle and expense??

Well no , you're right in theory its not worth the trouble except its real difficult going to look at cars without transport and as I don't use the car that much easier to try and get it sorted by email/ebay etc. So have got code from Peugeot for key blade and got key blade cut but doesn't start car. Have bought replacement fob with electronics from ebay and dismantled IR receiver in roof to get code but don't seem to be able to do anything with it. In addition all the forums seem to suggest you don't really need the code anyway but just point the key at the IR receiver in the roof for 10 seconds and it reprograms itself - except it doesn't in my case. Any ideas? Or should I get on my bike and look for a car
