My dear old M reg oil burner is sagging at the rear, and less than 100,000 on the clock. I have GTi wheels and they seem to be scraping the tyres on the bodywork. The wheel bearings are OK, I suspect the trailing arm bushes/bearings are worn. I've looked in vain for a manual explanation. What goes wrong here? And how do I fix it? The car also sits low at the back as if the suspension needs adjusting....

It will be the radius arm bearings for sure. This is a specialist and expensive job so the best solution is to find a second hand axle (a good one though).I think I have one, will look in my store this w/end and let you know.

Sorry its as good as yours!! one side is seized solid,so keep looking for a good second hand assy. I`ve found its a waste of time overhauling these axles now as it works out so expensive in parts & labour. I get full recon rear axles from www.sspengineering.co.uk all ready to fit for £350 +VAT delivered to my door.If you live near Honiton in Devon they will fit it for that price.

Thank you for the offer, Oldpug, and for looking for a spare rear axle. I suppose we are talking about a complete subframe. It's good news that recon assemblies are available. These bearings seem to be the only weak point on an otherwise fine little car. Nothing's perfect, eh?
