The XU7 is a 8 valve single cam engine found in 405`s & 306`s late 90`s.The XU10 is the early 16V twin cam engine found in 306`s,405`s & 406`s up to 2000.The EW was a completely new 16V twin cam engine in 406`s from about 2000.

Haven't posted anything on here since 2007!! Oldpug is on the right tracks. The XU7 is a 1.8 litre unit and could be a diesel (XU7DT for example) or a petrol (XU7JP for example). The XU10 is a 2 litre engine but could be 8 or 16 valve. The XU10J2 was a 2.0 litre 8 valve and the XU10J4 was a 16 valve. The EW units are almost entirely different and share only the crankshaft from the earlier XU engines.

A 1998 406 will not have a EW engine as they were first introduced in 2001.Are you in the UK ? as some countries have different spec` 406`s to us. This is the UK. Have a look at your chassis/vin number. if it has LFX in it the engine will be a XU7JB eightvalve 1.8 : LFY will be XU7JP4 16v 1.8 : RFV will be a XU10J4R 16v 2.0.
