I have just got my 304 cabriolet back from a local garage and it would appear she is not well. Low compression, spitting oil mist out of the breather, leaking drive shaft seals and a leaking 'O' ring on the water pump. I am assuming that I will need to lift the engine and am wondering if any can give me some helpful advice on pitfalls to avoid etc when lifting the engine. Also is this the kind of job that can be done in a weekend? I thought I had got the car ready to sell having repaired the sills drivers floor and footwell etc. I was wrong. Finally does anyone know where I can get a new set of piston rings from and the seals for the drive shafts and water pump? Thank you in advance.

Hi Mike, From a parts point of view the driveshaft oil seals are still available from your local peugeot dealer , part number 312144. The O ring (its square!) is 120807 and you can call Horderns Motor House in Chapel en le Frith who are showing stock. The piston rings are going to be more difficult as I cannot find any genuine new ones. It also depends on the year of your car (chassis number)to identify the correct ones. Have you tried ebay?Hope this is of some help, parts@clubpeugeotuk.org.

Thank you Icky. That is most helpful I will contact Horderns today. As regards the piston rings I will try Dean Hunter. Do you happen to know if there is a good step by step by step guide on how to remove the engine?

In all fairness Dean is not showing any piston rings (genuine) but it is worth a try as he might have some non genuine parts. The only step by step guide I can think of is by using a Haynes manual? If you send me an email address on parts@clubpeugeotuk.org I will scan the relevent pages for you and send them to you in pdf. Ian

Maybe do a cylinder leakage test before going straight for the rings. The valves may be burnt out or not seating correctly. If the rings are gone it'll be blowing blue smoke from your exhaust. Is the compression down on all four cyls?
They're a pretty robust engine and it may just be a head gasket job and lap in the valves. If you do the rings you'll also need liner seals.
A second hand engine may be easier than a strip.
