Has anyone done the ball joints on the front wishbones before? A bit of a funny set up and looks like special tools should be used.
Any tips for replacing them would be grateful!
Cheers!

Now you got me Dave? it must be 25 years since?? I`m pretty sure its the same as my 404,you get an overhaul kit and need two special sockets to get it all apart.I have the two sockets for my 404 and knowing Peugeot in those days I would not be surprised if the kits and the sockets where the same. You remove the cap (with the grease nipple in) then a plastic shell, then a special nut and ball and the arm comes off the strut.(are you still with me?) the pin that goes through the ball is part of the strut!! so treat that with great care. I bet Dean Hunter will have the kits and if you want to borrow my sockets send me a PM.

I`ve been refreshing my memory on Serie04.com as you can view the parts pages, trouble is I can not read French! I`m correct with the kits, just like my 404. If the cap with the nipple in is secured with a circlip the kit part no is 3640.04 and if it is screwed in 3640.07

Well done Dave, its a simple job isn't it (with the right tools),you can even do it in situ without removing the strut or the arm. All it costs is a little overhaul kit, these days if the ball joint has movement its the whole suspension arm on most cars.

I tried doing it in situ, but I think someone had already had a go with a chisel on the grease cap. The three lugs were so chewed up the tool wouldn't grip it. I had to resort to a big hammer and chisel to remove it. Then used the 4 pin socket to remove the nut. That would've been very awkward to remove without the special tool. Very similar to a locking wheel nut really.
Cheers again! The sockets got posted today thanks to my Mrs!

Hi,
It seems like I'll be needing to replace the lower ball joints on my 404D 1966(one at least this summer) and probably one on my 504 GLD 1977 next year before the yearly inspection. I have bought two overhaul kits for the 404. My questions on how to do this and if there are any special tools needed for this kind of job I haven't received any answers in the Swedish Peugeot Forum during the past three months my question has been there and my French is too bad to understand technical descriptions. The DIY manual I have only says that this is a job that should be done at a Peugeot work shop. Then I found this interesting thread:-).
As I understand there is no absolute need to detach the spring leg from the car to do this job - I don't understand what the word situ means(and Google translate did not either) but it is used when it is described that you don't have to remove the strut or arm so I guess it is a abbreviation for something...or..?.
Some questions:
- Do I need any additonal tools to do this with the leg remaining in the car - a spring compressor or something? - Is there a photo anywhere on how this special tool mentioned looks like? My thought was that if it is possible to make my own tool and adapt replacement sockets using a grinder.
I have replaced ball joints in cars that have had them bolted to the wishbones and then I needed a jack to press the joint into place in the strut but this is a new experience for me on how to do.
Regards, Kalle

Hi kalle, "in situ" can mean you do the job on the car, without removing the strut/suspension leg. Its best to remove the suspension arm bolts first,so then the arm is just held to the strut by the ball joint. Then follow my instructions to "Dave" in my post above.I`ve never attempted this job without the special Peugeot sockets so you will have to use your initiative?? Have a look at my attachments first so will get an idea how it all comes apart and the special sockets needed.Give your suspension arm a good clean around the ball joint. The outer cap (with the grease nipple)is the most difficult to unscrew, even with the socket. If you look carefully it will have been locked in place with small dents, try to undo the dents. I hope you can understand my description and the attachments give you an idea. Best of luck Mike.
