Hi on the motorway on wednesday cruising at 65mph after returning from France in Boxer-based camper everything running very smoothly.....van has 19000 miles on original engine.
all of a sudden engine started Missing, say 10 times, then power dropping, started to smoke out exhaust pulled into hard shoulder switched off engine as soon as I switched it off engine started to runaway at absolute max revs - very black smoke Let out the clutch in gear and stopped it after max 2-3 secs (FRIGHTENING!) all the above happened in less than 1 minute, no warning lights showed. Towed to Garage!
in the garage: the EGR valve is showing as coked up and stuck, diagnostics are pointing to EGR problem 2 years ago EGR was also coked up and engine mgmt lite came on.
IM thinking turbo seals leaking causing EGR to slowly coke up( note had coked perviously), followed by instataneous full failure of turbo seals on Motorway leading to runaway?
Has anyone any experience of this? Im anxious as hope to head away laste August and wouldnt like a repeat performance!!!!

Sounds like the turbo has let go and it's been running on oil. Yes I've had it 3 times now. One of them times it bent the con rods and was a scrapper. Ooops! Sometimes happens if the engine is over filled with oil. Does it run okay now? Is the turbo noisy?

Thanks! The garage havent been able to get to the inlet side of the turbo yet to check (later today) needs to go on lift or over pit, it runs but like a pig! The oil level was ok tho, the fact that it all happened suddenly seems to indicate the turbo seals are the culprit... will post more here when i find out more Brian.

If there is now loads of white smoke, it indicates low compression likely caused by bent con rods. Hope it's not that. It may be just running rough due to a jammed egr valve.

After a lot of too and fro, the Turbo was removed and yes had oil leaking everywhere, new turbo reinstalled and when replaced and restarted(yesterday) theres a "tapping" sound and its missing! ==> Sounds like bent con rods and bent valves!!! groan! Perceived wisdom is replacement engine rather than try and fix what's there! Currently garage owner is invesdtigating the alternatives for me. I Will post more when know more!

OK just got back the van on Friday last, 5245 Euros later, a Piston had a hole in it and bore was toast, so engine out rebore, new pistons etc. New EGR valve also. Its running well now and smooth while driving and on tickover except seems more clatter when rev a bit too high ( esp in first - could this be the EGR valve? It was was stuck and not showing a light on the dash)
