Hi my heater fan isn't working - there is power going to it so I want to take it out to check it over. The Haynes manual isn't very explicit so could someone give a quick methodology for getting it out - do I have to dismantle the dashboard to get to it or can I just remove the fan housing without having to disconnect all the heater controls? thanks

Managed to get the heater unit out after a lot of struggling. The manual omits to mention the 2 plates that are bolted to the back of the bulkhead! However, I managed to break the very brittle plastic heater thermostat. I don't know if it was working but replacements are very expensive even if available. I will probably bypass it altogether but then I would need to find and modify a flanged tube to fit to the inlet plate on the heater matrix. Alternatively I have read on the forum that 205 matrices are the same size. Has anyone actually fitted one? If so, any tips? Thanks Phil

I couldn't find a direct replacement heater matrix so I've fitted an alternative that's an exact match for size. It's an aluminium one for a 74-81 Mini from Tameside radiators, £16! The inlet and outlet pipes come straight out so I've bought some 90 degree hose elbows to meet up with the existing hoses. I broke the thermostatic valve and am going to use a cheap £6 valve. It won't operate with the heater control cable but I can just reach down and operate it manually - I'll probably just have it on in Winter and off in summer. I'll report back on how good the heater is. The fan wasn't broken, The problem was the fan speed control down by the left heater valve where the spring terminal wasn't connecting with circuit board. I've bent the arm down slightly so that it contacts and all is good. Phil
