Hi, my son and I have been planning a 404 Pickup buy-and-restore project for some time. This, irritatingly, has been put on hold by the current lockdown. The plans and hunting are continuing apace though. As soon as we have a truck in the driveway we will be joining the club.
We have a question: What year did the 404 Pickup change from worm drive rear axle to hypoid? We recognise that it may have been a spongy period of changover, but a rough guide would be useful.
We will need all sorts of help once we get a truck, are there any other 404 Pick up owners out there?
All the best, Winston & Patrick

I think every single 404 Pick-up had hypoid. They were introduced in 1967 I think and the Estate cars got hypoid differentials at the same time.

Hi, Thanks for the responses, we are in rural Worcestershire, but the plan is a train-bicycle escapade to southern France, look at a few, choose one, chuck the bikes in the back and drive it home! Optimistic, but exciting. We have some good french car nut contacts over there and a few leads on likely candidates. Dream choice would be a diesel, blue or grey mid '70s....it would need to be a runner with controle technique in date. We aren't afraid of the rebuild, but will probably need to hone our welding skills! Any knowledge on where to get panels and repair sections? We'll take a look at rezocar. All the best, W & P

Sounds like you have some good ideas, good luck. As for parts, the best guy in the UK is Dean Hunter www.peugeotparts.co.uk he is a Peugeot boffin. Mind you body panels and repair sections could be a problem?? The other place for parts is www.serie04.com in France. I`ve used both, no problems, good service.

When Googleing 404 Pick Up I came across this. Couldn't resist posting it here. Just shows how tough they are.
