I believe the 406 coupe wheel pcd is 4x108, which is quite a common size shared with many other Peugeots (405,205 to name two) as well as Citroens and Fords, so you should have little trouble finding a style to suit you.

You have a 2000 HDI model, so it has the Brembo calipers at the front, doesn't it? It was a problem for me when I wanted to change the wheels of my 2000 V6.
The huge Brembo calipers come in the way for many after-market wheels and you need to fit spacers. This is what I did to fit Team Dynamics 18" Diablo alloys on my Coupé. My concern was that I was going to get a lot of vibrations through the steering wheel, but to my surprise, there are hardly any.

If you change wheel size with your new alloys, remember to be careful with your tyre size. You'll need to find something equivalent to the original wheel/tyre ratio fitted on the car. If you buy new alloys/tyres from specialists, they should keep you right. I don't know about Ireland, but the car can otherwise fail an MOT in France and in the UK.
What size are the original Peugeot alloys on the HDI, 15" or 16"?
