I posted a query a couple of weeks ago regarding a grinding noise from my 206 when the car was in nuetral and the clutch pedal is up. I've since gone with the dealers advice in that the clutch needed replacing. However, I have had the clutch replaced by a firm of 'nationwide' mechanics and they have cited the gearbox as the source of the problem ( T reg 206 XS with 43K on the clock!!). I have since got the car back and the noise is still there. Furthermore, when changing gear the gearbox feels more 'notchy' and now have probs getting into first gear when the vehicle is moving . I don't know whether I should take back to the place that did the clutch, or trust the dealer to put it right? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi
The clutch center is correct in saying 206 gearboxes have a weak spot.
Im pretty sure it the input shaft & bearing that gives problems on these, I would have to check with a mate of mine who works for Peugeot before confirming this.
I would seek the advice of a Peugeot dealer or gearbox specialist before it gets any worse.

Before anybody attempts to replace your clutch and/or the gearbox (!), get your gear selection links checked. Although you have a modern Peugeot and I don't know what gearbox assembly looks like on the 206, gear links sometimes needed adjustment on 504s. Common symptoms were slightly crunchy gearboxes and gears difficult to select (specially 1st gear).

Hi
Ive spoken to my mate ( Once he had returned from a weeks Peugeot training course )
He said "A notchy 206 gearbox isnt anything really to worry about"
There has also been a couple of reported cases of a part failing on the gearbox, Its on the nose of the gear box & held on with 3 bolts, Its something to do with the release bearing & shaft. A stiff clutch is your first clue to troubles ahead.
I would get a second opinion of a Peugeot dealer / gearbox specalist before spending any more money fixing it.
