Hi - I need to get a used alternator for my 309. Problem is, last time I tried this they sent me the wrong one... It's complicated by the fact that I'm abroad at the moment, but need to use the car really soon after getting back, so I'm posting an ad on the internet and giving a friend's mobile number for garages etc. to phone. I need to be able to give precise instructions that will unambiguously identify the engine type for the purposes of getting an alternator. The car is a G reg, 1990 - I know there was a change around that time, but it's the later one with the rear light cluster that's angled rather than rectangular. It's a "Style", 1.3, petrol. The alternator is at the front on the left, with the fan belt wheel on the left. For some reason, the last time I was sent an alternator that seemed to be designed to fit the other way around, sort of a mirror image, and with a fanbelt wheel that stuck out a bit too much, although the bloke said it came out of a 309 with what he thought was the same type of engine... both the old one and the one I was sent were Bosch. What's the best way to explain things to avoid mixups? Alternatively (excuse the pun!) if anyone here has an alternator they want rid of...

OK, well according to my subsequent research the engine should be the G1 "talbot" version, and yet the alternator that didn't fit supposedly came out of that type of engine. Could it be be a different engine (depending on country of manufacture perhaps?) or are there subtypes?

I'd have thought that a 1.3 style would have the TU type engine, the alternator should be fairly standard across all TU engines. Unless the style was running out the last of the XY engines as fitted to early 205's and earlier cars.
mod: Up until 1991 the 309 was powered by a simca 1300 engine (!!) apparently The G1 talbot engine) , so your alternator would be one for a simca. This should be fairly easy to source.
I suspect that most parts people will go straight for teh TU engine parts catalogue so you will have to explain that yours has the early Simca engine.

Thanks - I think this must be what caused the confusion last time. It probably didn't help that I said the car was a later model, based on the slight bodywork modifications introduced in 1990...

What is the exact CC of the engine, 1.3 could either be the Simca dirived unit, or the PSA one like in 106. Try GSF, www.andyspares.com they are listing two alternators for Petrol 309s, and have quick mail order without a problem sending stuff back. Your other option is to get your mate to wip off the old one, run it in to the nearest Lucas UK branch (yellow pages), for a exchange.
