Help please i've got an irritating buzzing, whirring noise from somewhere under the bonnet when i accelerate. Even if im in neutral and just stood the whirring noise increases the more i press the accellerator and then when i let my foot off the whirring decreases. Very annoying . One of those things you turn your radio up to hide the noise. Any ideas please. Will eventually take it to the garage but have little time at the mo. Any help ?

Bit of a needle in a haystack. Is this petrol or diesel, HDi or not?
Odd engine noises can come from all sorts off places and can be a pain to locate becuase everything makes a noise under the bonnet.
On any 206 engine it could be the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, timing belt.
You could try removing the auxillary belts for the alternator etc one at a time and see if it goes away.
How many miles has the car done? Timing belts should be changed at the correct intervals and shouldnt make any unusual noises, however if the belt tension pully bearings are worn this needs doing. The belt, pully etc can be bought as a kit. Water pump bearings could be a cause and should be combined in the timing belt change if possible.
Have you checked the exhaust? Any loose bolts, brackets and holes will cause these symptoms too. A exhaust manifold gasket can blow, I have have to change these on my old 106 and 504 becuase of whizzing noises.
It its turbo diesel, then is there a problem with the turbo, check all the associated pipe work and air intakes. Leaks or damaged pipes could be the problem.

Hi Engine cover mounting studs would be a good place to look at first. The cover will make a irritating buzzing / rattling sound if lose, If it gets really bad the oil filler cap starts popping off too. Check your engine cover

Hi, newbie here (to this forum at least, but always been a pug driver). Seems I may have the same problem.
I've recently bought a 2003 206 LX 2.0 HDi 5Dr. Like it a lot, but I hear a reasonably load continuous metallic sqeaking (not like loose belt squeal, more like an unoiled bike) from the alaternator/power steering belt system when the car is idling. My friend, a mechanic, had a quick look and thinks it could be the bearings failing in one of the tensioners.
As it's still under warranty (until sept 2006), I took it to my local pug dealership. They just sprayed belt lub on it (exactly as my friend tried before suggesting I take it in), said no fault obvious, and told me to come back 'if it gets louder'.
Should I force the issue with pug? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Ross.

Insist!! Becuase you can bet your last penny, that day after the warranty runs out, something will happen. Try another dealer (not of the same group!). At the end of the day it is down to you to proove the fault so if you can get a qualified mechanic to detect it too, you then have a good argument if the Peugeot dealer cannot mend it. Get the 'detecting' mechanic to jot down ona business letter head the suspected fault for proof. (Or even...... call the AA and get a breakdown report although you might have to fib and say there was a terrible screching coming from the engine and play dumb).

Thanks,
I had this funny feeling when I took it in they wouldn't fix it. But a car only a couple of years old shouldn't be making such noises (my old early 90's 205 D, although it sounded like a tractor, didn't have any abnormal squeaks).
I'll take it back in a week or so insisting noise is louder and maybe embelish it a bit, say with burning rubber smells. If that doesn't work, I'll do as you suggested with my mechanic mate, who has his own garage (I'd get him to fix it as I trust him much more, but it's still got over a year warranty and I'd like all work done officially by pug if possible).
Thanks a lot for the advice.
Ross.

One last thing - is the air conditioning (not climate control, but basic A/C) powered by the alternator belt? On occasion I've thought I smelt an odd smell (maybe a little like buring rubber!). Maybe the two are related?
Cheers,
Ross.
