I imagine this has been asked (and answered) many times before.
Can the 5 speed box off a 1971cc 505 be grafted onto a 1796cc 1980 504? (its a base model, and has the banjo rear axle)
An if so, straight swap or is there engineering involved?

ooooowwww a topic thats played my mind too for my 504GLD. The answer is yes and no. The 5 speed will fit not problems and mate to the engine, as its the same in 505. However... the gearbox I am told is a bit longer than the 4 speed, meaning you have to get the prop shaft shortened. All new 504s rolling off African production lines have 5 speed as standard so obviously sometime in the last 20 years a modification was made. As for sourcing parts from Africa not so sure!

Well an update on this mystical question. It would seem any BA rear wheel drive gearbox from a 504 Pickup or 505 will fit, without modification, as long as your 504 is a later model with the wider transmission tunnel. The only problem is that the speedo will not work correctly. This is not a problem if you have a GR model with the brown plastic dash as you can fit the pickup speedo.
