Hi All,
I'm new to the board and I have been driven here (sorry!) by my 407. It has done a grand total of 5500 miles and is on it's 3rd engine.
The day I received it I checked the oil because it was so noisy. I was told it needed to be run in. after 1000 miles I took it back and they said " it might be a little noisy - see how you go". After 3500 miles they volunteered to change the engine.
The second engine was so bad that they didn't even tell me - they just swapped it for the third engine!
2000 miles on, I don't think this is any better - noise wise - than the first one. It is certainly much noisier than my old 406 diesel.
Anybody got any views, experience of this engine?

I guess I should tell you what the noise is like! Well it sounds like a 1950's Diesel. I know that it is a diesel, but the clattering sounds like it has loose tappets slapping about. I haven't tied down any particular time when it is worse - I would guess probably when it is underload, like going uphill. Sometimes it is relatively quiet (relative to it's norm not other cars!). We have 2 other 136's in the fleet and they are also rather noisy but the owners are not as concerned as I am.

Hve no experience of this engine, but general diesel rules may suggest that the timing is up the creek. If fuel is injected to soon, i.e. advanced it will cause extra knocking. Maybe a faulty ECU or associated part on the cold starting?

I have a 407SW 136 and have 3 instances of the engine suddenly running noisy for about 15 mins and then the knocking disappearing. Dealer has said there is no problem - but it could have been bad fuel. The problem was not there when I got the car (new) and only started at 3K miles. I have now done 5K and for the last 2 1/2 weeks it has become much quieter. Dealer cannot explain this but asking around I have been told the HDI is NOT a quiet engine, it certainly clatters under load. Mine had increased noise between 1500 and 2000 revs even under light load but this seems to have gone (fingers crossed). Very frustrating.

All - I finally lost my rag with the dealer this weekend when my 407SW had a totally manic noisy fit. I wrote in the strongest terms to the dealer and took it up to them this morning. They put in on the diag and guess what - no fault found - but they are replacing the ECU and BSI as there are some other niggling faults developing (cruise control refuses to engage sometimes and service indicator say I am 50 miles overdue for a service at 5000 miles!). Despair. Anyway they are keeping it a few days, doing the work but have lent me a 206 GTI HDI so no complaints there. Lets hope they sort this once and for all. Watch this space.

Yes - a GTI HDI - that's what they lent me and impressive it was, not the quietest car in the world, and a rock hard ride - but it was fast and handled brilliantly. And it did about 45mpg. Cool car as far as I was concerned.
