Does anyone know of a good, reliable garage where I can get a right hand drive 504 cabriolet serviced and checked over. The car has been looked after has a very blow mileage but hasn't been driven properly for about 2 years. I want to start getting some use out of it. Also does anyone know about what is required petrol wise? I think the last time we put fuel in we could use the standard leaded petrol. Looking forward to hearing from someone

Where are you based Roberto?
Recommending an excellent garage in St Ives wouldn't help if you live in Dundee!!

Hi, you need to use 4 star or LRP petrol. If you use unleaded you need to use a additive like Castrol's Valve Master Plus (if taking this route dont mix brands of additive).
The car's 4 cylinder engine is basically the same as a 505 models, and V6 engines are the PRV (Peugeot/Renault/Volvo), so everything is fairly common too. Your local Peugeot dealership will most likey charge a fortune and have little experience these days of the car, so head for a French specialist. Like Andrew said where are you?!

Most Peugeot dealers won't know what to do on your car beside the basic oil change. They no longer have the skills to maintain old cars like these and you need to find a specialist (I found an ex-Peugeot mechanic in Aberdeen who knows my car from his early days at the local dealership but that's lucky!)
What model of cab is it? What year?
With regards to petrol, I would not recommend either LRP or unleaded with additives. Additives are most likely to leave a big chunk of gel at the bottom of your petrol tank. I used standard Unleaded 95 in my 1977 304 and my 1985 305 in the 90s for several tens of thousands of miles and never had the slightest problem. You have to consider 2 things with petrol: 1) the mileage of your engine 2) the tiny/marginal amount of lead that was found in "leaded" petrol since the 70s (for info, they use unleaded in the US since the 70s and I don't think 504 engines were different there)
You see, this concept of valve seat damage is a bit of a fallacy unless your engine has a very low mileage (something quite rare on 1970s Peugeot). I think you can forget about LRP or additives and use unleaded 95. That's what my 504 V6Ti runs on since I bought it in 2002. I've done over 10,000km like this and the car runs fine.
You have a car close to 30years of age, so it'd be interesting to know what you mean by "low" mileage.

Sorry I should of made that a little clearer, 4 cylinder engines should use a additive with octaine booster, or risk valve seat problems. Volvo have released data for the PRV 2664cc V6 unit saying that the PRV engine is fine on super unleaded. If it has a carb it should have a jet needle changed, Volvo part number 3501202, and use RON 98. All others to use RON 98, or Lead Replacement Petrol should be considered. download a table from www.volvocars.co.uk/_GlobalNav/Showroom/ProductFAQs/productfaqs.htm#A7 use engine B27

Pffff, these so-called "valve seat problems". Has anyone actually encountered such a thing? Most cars of the time of the 504 have swallowed enough miles to be protected against this "risk". If the car has only done 20kmiles, maybe, but once you've covered 60 or 70kmiles, forget it.
Roberto, drop a post on the forum of 504cc.com and see by yourself.

Well the pages and pages of VSR talk on AussieFrogs clearly show the Peugeot, Pre-82 engines do suffer. But lets start another thred on this if need be, and get back to helping this chap find a good garage :-)

I am based in Bewdley Worcestershire although the car is garaged in Birmingham. The car is right hand drive and has a genuine mileage of 42,758 miles, it was registered in 1972 and we are the only owners. This car belong to my mum and she has now passed it on to me as she can no longer drive it. Unfortunately it has not been driven for the last few years but I am keen to get it back on the road. I also need a nearside mirror which seems impossible to find - any ideas?
