Peugeot 405 turbo diesel 1.8: When i undo the radiator cap from cold, water spurts out and also air. What causes this problem and how can it be rectified?

Possible blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder head. Run the engine with cap removed, if bubbles or oil is seen in the water one of the above has failed.

". I experienced similar pressure build up in the coolant system in my car recently. Hope it helps
