my 205 has the habit of not engaging the starter motor. when i turn the key it makes a faint buzzing sound. when it does decide to start the starter comes in strong and it starts no problem. i thought the fault was due to a loose or corroded connection but i have checked all the connection and sprayed them with copious amounts of dw40. any ideas what the problem could be. thanks.

The starter motor itself coul be going you usually get a high pitched whizzing sound as the starter pin spins but is not get pushed forward to engage on the fly wheel. A quick fix is to get a rod and bang the starter motor whilst someone turns the engine over! - Its what the AA man did to my old car... before offering me a tow!

more likely to be a problem with the solenoid not making a strong connection everytime.
That or the starter motor actuator arm is sticking, which a good belt will indeed fix from time to time. However the motor will eventually burn out due to overloading.
you can remove the motor and give it a good clean and at that time check that the actuator arm comes out freely. If not grease it.
