Hi all. I have a 1988 Pug GTI 1.9 1988 Freg. It has been trouble free since I bought it 18months ago. I use it daily. However, the other day driving along the road, it spluttered and died. It will no longer start. The engine turns over. I have checked the spark, and this appears to be ok. I am thinking fuelling, but is their any sensor that commonly goes to cause this? Is it possible that the fuel pump has failed? Any help would be much apprechiated. Regards,
Gaz

Check to see if you've got fuel pressure at the injectors. A common 205 GTi failure is the "tachymetric" fuel pump relay, located under the steering column on a 1988 model. This relay operates whenever it gets a engine running signal from the ignition module and then feeds the fuel pump. You should be able to hear the pump prime when switching on the ignition.

I checked the relay and it seems to be working. The fuel pump can be heard to run on for 3 seconds after you release the key, when trying to start the car. The other thing is that we towed yeaterday and it bump started at around 20mph. We stopped and it drove briefly before cutting out. This continued, but it failed to start unless towing. Any more ideas?! All appreciated! Cheers Guys.

Had the same fault, due to ignition amplifier connections loose, located rear of battery tray. Hope this helps. ;D
