I have a 306 hdi estate on an 02 plate with 76000 on the clock,on start up when cold there is a loud ticking noise which accelerates with the engine speed, when the engine is warm the ticking goes,a local garage changed the alternator belt last week and said it could be the crankshaft pulley wheel which has a rubber seal or something which wears away causing play.Any ideas if this could be or could it be something else.

I have lost count how many HDI crankshaft pulleys we have replaced. The metal spring damper falls to bits and they rattle,I have even had them fall off! But,normally the noise is all the time no matter what and will come from the belt area and be a rattle rather than a tick tick.If the noise is high up on the top of the engine it may be a hydraulic valve lifter sticking.[tappet noise]

Thanks for that, the noise is more prominent with the bonnet down at the side of the o/side front wheel so it could well be as you said,is it an easy job for an amateur mechanic as i will have a go rather than paying the garage again.

Yes it sounds like the pulley and its an easy job [for us,30mins labour charge] Remove PAS belt and one bolt for the crank pulley.BUT!!,if you have not got an air gun you will have a problem undoing the crank bolt,it will be very tight. The pulley from a Peugeot dealer will cost you over £100!! we have tried some cheap factor ones and they were crap.If you get a non Peugeot Dealer one make sure its a Lamferouder make.[I`m sure that is the wrong spelling]it`s German.
