:)Any discussion here of XD2/3 series engines? I'd welcome some info on parts availability or sources of S/H engines. regards

Hello ! 504 diesel here with XD2 engine, what are you after I am sure I point you in the right direction. I am assuming you have a 505 as this post is in the '05 section?

:DAh, good to know there are still pushrod diesel enthusiasts! Not actually a 505 but a Peugeot J9-based motorhome fitted at present with an XD2PS T/D engine. I'm trying to locate an XD3TE engine with the ancillaries, or at least with the inlet-exhaust manifold and the turbo. I'd have the XD2PS engine for exchange if suitable for a deal (L.R. enthusiasts love them). Otherwise it'll be an XD3 out of an LDV Convoy. Air Filter elements also seem a bit of a minefield, dependent on the precise container fitted - mine is cylindrical.

J9 not something you see everyday. I guess you best bet will be to find a LDV van with the turbo engine. You might find some old Land/Range Rovers with these in too.
Air cleaners do vary. My 504 is an oil bath type, but export models (export to where i dont know), had paper elements. The Sierra XD2 uses a massive air cleaner sat on top of the engine, taking in air from above the injector pump. (it also has a modified rocker cover).
Citroen C25 van I think has the turbo XD3 engine in it, but not sure that the similar Talbot Express was turbo or not. The Fiat Ducato I'm sure had a Fiat engine.
Don't forget though a late 505 will be 2.5TD as well.
I certainly know Ford supplied engines have parts not compatible with Peugeot. Fords have different flywheels, and the starter motor isn't interchanable with Peugeot cars becuase of the amount of teeth. LDV may be the same.
Don't forget the XD3 and XDP 4.90 is still made today by Mahindra.
Finding an engine is best done by buying an MOT failure I think, and stripping it.

Thanks, the list of possible vehicles is getting longer! Info. on Ford incompatibility is especially useful as an early Ford Scorpio was on my list. My air cleaner is a foam plastic element, apparently from a Talbot Tagora (!) but other PSA vehicles must have had them as well. From what you write a rolled Mahindra Jeep might be a possibility for an engine. The Peugeot J9, obsolete in France now (but still seen in huge numbers), is still made in Turkey as a mini-bus! Thanks again.

So how come the engine change, is it just worn out or needing a couple more bhp to make the hills easier? If its more power you could tweek your XD2S. I'm sure some plumbing of an oil cooler and intercooler from an XUD might be possible. XD2S heads have slightly lower compression that non turbo, I don't know how much more umph you'd get by changing it to a standard XD2 head would give. My 504 non turbo has a XD2S head, so I'm the other way round, but she still goes fine.
A diesel specialist will also be able to tweek turbo boost and fueling to get the most power too.
Mat.

Something just crossed my mind, that the 2.5 Ford Scorpio used the Italian made VM engine same as the Rover 800/Jeep. Sure it was only Sierra XD2 and Granada MK1 the 2.1 version.

:)Thanks for the suggestions: I did have in mind getting the existing engine tinkered with, but thought - hey, why not get the slightly larger engine while I'm at it. Van Aaken seems to have a good reputation but are they value for money? Existing engine (100k.miles, not much) has led a hard life and was c.85bhp at best originally. My aim is for the 110bhp (apparently at lower revs.) and much higher torque of the XD3TE. I wish, I wish....

I'd be included maybe to see what XUD parts you can rob like an oil cooler, Citroen BX TD would make a cheap doner car.
