Firstly id like to say hi to all I have just joined and for good reason i have been searching for a good 205 for about two years (I'm very choosy). I think i have now found one, it is in fantastic shape and i hope i get the chance to buy it. I have a question before i buy the car its a 1988 1.9 GTI 5 speed manual petrol and has 52,000 genuine miles with all docs and history. Firstly before i go on I'm not looking for speed i love the car as it is and have a fast enough everyday car already. 1. Am i right in saying the the engines are at 130 bhp 2. i would like to put a few more horses under the hood maybe 10-20 bhp. As you can understand i am not interested in changing engines etc as the millage is fantastic. so my question i guess is what can i do to archive this both sensibly and cost effectively (1000 maybe). I live on the east coast of Scotland so please any garage suggestion bear my location in mind. if it con not be done i am not overly bothered its the look and child hood dream for me I'm afraid. Once i trawl through the pages I'm sure ill get to see more people pics and other jobs and sadly look forward to it Cheers jazz

Welcome to the club. From what you describe (and your choosy nature) it sounds as if you have found a nice GTi.They are very good cars and finding a good one is getting harder the older they get.Yes the 1.9 was advertised as 130bhp (when they were new.)I would say the 1.9 is quick enough for daily road use and any "mods" would put a strain on your 24 year old engine. Also insurance companies must be aware if the car is modified. My advice is to keep it standard and make sure everything is in perfect condition.Find yourself a small independent Peugeot specialist who has had lots of experience with GTi`s,even if it means a long trip.I`m sure it will be worth it as a good bloke can add a few BHP`s by servicing and various "adjustments".

Hi thank you
I have been doing a lot of research over the last few days and must say i think i agree with you. I have looked at possibly doing an MI-16 conversion as i think it would be worth the money in the long run to make the car more desirable, but for now i think ill leave alone.

Good for you,and please forget about the Mi16 conversion that is a massive undertaking.I`ve seen a few, most of which were disasters.I never understood the point of it all.As said keep it original spec and spend your money making a nice car even better.

It's not that difficult really and the cheapest way to get more horses. Modifying an 8v to get even close to the standard 160bhp of the Mi16 is expensive. The GTI-6 option is also quite popular these days. However it appears you have find nice unmolested car and if I had thought the same 13 years ago, when I bought my first one, I would have left it alone!
