Hi there everybody. I've just joined the forum and I'm hoping for some advice - I'm wondering if anyone can help diagnose a vibration on my Phase II 1.6 GTI.
There's no vibration until about 65 mph, after which there is a steadily increasing vibration that can be felt through the steering wheel and the seats.
The wheels have all been rebalanced (more than once) which seems to have made no difference. The drive shafts have been replaced - when we looked, we noticed that they had become a little oval-shaped and thought replacing them might be the answer - but the vibration is still there. The front shock absorbers have also been replaced and that improved the situation a bit. We've also changed the road wheels out one-by-one in case there was something loose within a tyre, but that made no difference (there's always a vibration felt through the steering wheel). The engine/gearbox mounts have been checked and they're all good. There's absolutely no free play in the steering,
The vibration is definitely road speed-related, not engine-speed related, which suggests that it's post-gearbox.
We've had the car up on a ramp, tried everything, but just can't work it out. It's a relatively low-mileage (sub 50k) car in fantastic condition apart from this! I'd love to hear from anyone that's had a similar problem - any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You have done everything I would have suggested. The only other part would be a distorted wheel flange? but i doubt this? Is it possible for you to try a set of wheels and tyres from another GTi? Just because the wheels have been successfully balanced does not necessarily mean the tyres are perfect.I can remember having a car that felt horrible to drive, fitting four new tyres transformed it.

Hi and thanks very much for your advice.
Tyre distortion had occurred to us because the car had been standing for a few months until recently. I know that sometimes they get flat spots when they've been left for a while so we did try blowing them up, with no result. It would have to be all of them though, because we've also swapped them off one by one!
Maybe I didn't inflate them enough to avoid the problem so I'll try blowing them up to 40psi and driving around gently for a while to see if things ease.
Thanks again - any other ideas greatly appreciated!
