hi there all, im new to your pretty cool web site and also as it happens new to the 205 catogory, i swapped my rover 220 turbo(rover rubbish i know, but mine was faster than a scooby in sraight line) for a little minted 205 1.9gti non-cat, non-pas version with 130hp and i must say it the most fun i have even had since the first time i felt a booby! lovely half leather seats and great driver position+visibilty combined with superp chassis design (great oversteer fully correctable with throttle feather brilliant!!!) makes it easy to see why this car robbed dubster of the 80's hot hatch trophy!!! My cousin used to own a 1.6 gti and i have made following comparissons.
1, The 1.9 delivers its power in a totally different way than the 1.6 with a great smooth delivery of tourque constant throughout the rev range rather than the very rorty nature of the 1.6 2, 1.6 brakes fadded majorly under heavy footing and did not give me safe feeling when on little B roads but the 1.9 doesnt fade (unless abused) and mine stops on a twenty pence piece!! 3,The rear beam and axle design was better on the 1.9 with slightly wider dimentions giving better road holding. I have just recently fitted a 309beam to mine. 4, and lastly the seats in the 1.9 are fabulous so comfy i could drive to dover from when i live which is inverness(with ear plugs in to deflect the many rattles which is a certain gti characteristic!!! thanks for reading folks

This might be a petty reason for choosing a 1.9 over a 1.6, but the 1.9 has more street cred than the 1.6. I don't think people will look at the 1.6 in the same light as the 1.9.
