Hi, My Peugeot 305 S5 (XU5S engine) has a bad flat spot about 3000 revs and poor acceleration. I have cleaned the plugs and twin choke carburettor, checked the timing & compression(good) and checked for air leaks, but with little difference.
This weekend I checked the valve clearances and they were all wider than spec. I also noticed that the cam tips came to a shallow 'V' point. Does this indicate a knackered camshaft? Also, would this explain the symptoms I describe? Regards, Donaldiesel

Have you tryed rebuilding the carb, somtimes they get a bit tired espeshialy if its a solex. somtimes as the engine moves as you rev it a gap can open in exhasust manafold/system and cause probs. Also could be a distributer advance problem could cause the problem, sticky weights week springs, leaky vacume advance, worn shaft etc. As for the valves I wouldnt wory too much, whats the mileage? just adjust the clearances and compare cam loabs to pic of one in Haynes manual and see if ther is much differance.

did you check ot the amount of air that came along with the essence? mostly a bad acceleration is caused by not enough or to much air intake into the carter room !
