You can adjust the clutch cable a bit by adjusting the cable grip system where it meets the clutch arm on the top of the gearbox.

note that when the pedal starts feeling 'notchy' in use you're probably about to pop a cable...
just a thought, but cables can stretch as well as clutches wearing out.
if it is the clutch, a TU 205 clutch (3 part kit of cover, plate and bearing) can be had for around £40 from a decent factors, and really is very simple to fit... the catch being that you need to get into the gearbox bellhousing to do it so may want to drop the engine and box out the bottom and split the box off... (easiest option)
if you don't have a clutch alignment tool, I've always found that the handle of one of my old cheap and nasty 3/8" ratchets fits just lovely! all you're trying to do is get it all on the same axis.
Take the opportunity to get some fresh transmission oil in there.
sounds like a big job, and may well take a day in typical makeshift home garage facilities, but very achievable. An engine crane is highly recommended but not absolutely necessary if you don't mind taking some liberties (REALLY not advised!)
If you're really organised it's also the ideal time to sort out any rusty patches lurking in the engine bay!

take the engine and box out?? bugger that Exactly! It's an "easy job" to drop an engine and 'box? My arse. Who, for example, has an engine crane just lying around in their garage. They're expensive bits of kit!

Thanks 205trf I shall now take out the engine and do the front end on my 1.4 cj, as you suggest.
I was toying with taking it to a clutch place but your post has changed my mind. I can get all the jobs done whilst the engine bay is clear.
Thanks again
