205 GTI Exhausts

I wonder if someone may be able to offer some advice - I've recently bought a 205 GTI, a 1988 1.6, that I plan to use it for a bit of a club level motorsport - sprints, hillclimbs, road rallies, solos, autotests, that kind of thing. Probably a few track days, and no doubt a bit of B road fun.

Anyways, so I'm generally happy with it apart from the exhaust - a previous owner fitted this horrible "sports" system with a pair of 3" tailpipes which have a dodgy DTM-esque upcut. Aside from the simple fact that it looks awful and I don't intend to start wearing baseball caps, there's the noise - a really nasty booming resonance from about 3000rpm through to about 4500rpm that gave me a headache on the drive home. I'm led to believe that the OE item is about as efficient as an exhaust can be and that there's a good probability that this is actually losing power. As well as looking horrific and sounding rubbish.

So - I'm looking for something to replace it with, preferably something that's going to be a bit quieter, look a bit more stock and still flow well. The current system is stainless, but I'm not overly bothered whether the replacement is mild steel, stainless or anything else. If it doesn't cost the earth, that'd be good too. I've spotted that Peter Lloyd Rallying do a mild steel "Group N" system, and all the usual suspects seem to offer a selection of "chav pipes" that I suspect would be no real improvement on the current arangement. Anyone else any suggestions?

take it to a custom exhaust builders, theyl sort you right out

You won't get better than the standard 205 GTi system in either 1.6 or 1.9 guise. Nearly all aftermarket systems actually loose power over the factory system.

If you do want to go performance then get a genuine Peugeot sport group N or A system. They only really deliver if you are increasing the power significantly. And that's another story. The standard head and cam on these is also very very good. Treat any after market power increases with a large pinch of salt unless accompanied by proper engine mods. There is no extra bolt on power to be had from these cars only expensive mods from specialist sources.

keep the standard manifold and front,and fit a magnex center and back box, they dont sound to loud, and the tail pipe looks great.

Either full std phase 2 system as it's a bigger bore, or the Magnex complete system and manifold if you can

The magnex system will certainly look better than the chavv'd up monstrosity you have described, should sound more realistically throaty too, nasty booms etc signify a badly designed system, which the Magnex is not.

Don't expect any more power though (or actually expect it to bring your car back up to standard power, so you will probably notice an improvement)

OK, so being the kind of person who generally prefers "sleepers", I'm going to go for something a bit standard. Are "pattern" systems generally ok or when you say OE replacement are we talking proper main dealer genuine Peugeot parts?

I've heard elsewhere that the downpipe off the end of the manifold is all-important - not sure if this has been replaced when the current chav pipe was fitted or not. Any obvious identifying marks?

And Chompy - thanks for your thoughts but I've heard far too many tales of woe regardinging the likes of Powerflow and Longlife to entertain the idea of a custom built. Pay top dollar for a system that's less efficient, badly made and sounds horrible? No thanks...

If your buying a Pattern std exhaust, goto Partco and ask for a Alvin system as the Downpipe has the centre divde to make a 4-2-1 system, The cheap'o' ones don;t have this and you loose peak power and torque.

Hi I'm new here and am also looking for a new exhaust system (well just manifold actually)
for my 205....It's a 1987 205 GTi S1 which was imported into to Australia (where I live now) privately so is a little different to the 205's officially imported into Australia by Peugeot (ie these had pollution control systems, rear wheel drums etc)..
As I'm thinking of reverting to a standard mainfold (it currently has a set of cheapo extractors that have rusted out) does anyone know if there are any differences between exhaust manifolds of 205's with and without pollution gear?
