Hiya
I have a Peugeot 605 SV Auto 1992 model which has variable power steering. This power steering keeps failing on me especially at low speeds which makes turning at junctions nearly impossible. My mechaninc has tried everything including tracing the wireing to wire 129c, if disconnected then connected again the PAS does work for a short while. Also the speedo does not work!!! Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do next..please?

Hi,
It sounds like it could be speed sensor related - either the sensor itself, or the computer losing the signal and therefore not sensing the speed. I suggest resetting the computer (using the stalk control) as you drive along. My guess is that doing that would be similar to you disconnecting the wire you refer to. If my guess is right, your PAS will work briefly after the resetting.

Hello alpinist
Thank you very much your advice, would you mind passing on just abit more of your knowledge and advising where I would find the stalk control in order to reset the computer? I imagine that if this does work I can just reset it every time the power steering fails?

Hi again,
I wasn't suggesting that, if it worked, you used that as a permanent solution - more that it would indicate the computer losing the signal. However, the stalk I'm referring to is the larger of the two on the right hand side of the steering wheel, otherwise known as the windscreen wiper stalk (not an attempt at humour - I realised it was that after typing the first bit). It should have a push-in button at the end with two (<I<I ) on the end. With the ignition on (or engine running) press this in for 10-12 seconds). That should reset the computer. My reasoning for suggesting this, is that the same computer calculates mpg every 3 seconds or so but I notice that on mine, if I let the engine go on over run or brake, the display suddenly shows the mpg as 99.9 mpg! However, it quickly recalculates when it gets the signal back. In your case, if it loses the signal it may be telling itself that either the car ain't moving, or is going so fast that power steering isn't needed. I realise it's a sort of convoluted logic, but that's what you need to figure out some French engineering.
