Hi, (I posted this on the general board and have no response, apologies if you've read it twice)
I've recently sorted out a power loss problem on my friend's '92 205 Roland Garros 1360cc Cabriolet by replacing the head gasket, all the electrical components and giving it a full service, including new oil, air and fuel filters. I stripped and cleaned the carb and was careful to replace the jets etc. in the correct places. I have set the timing and checked the vacuum advance/retard. The car is running really well at speed, but I cannot get the idle and mixture right. It's fitted with a Solex 32/34 Z2 carb.
I do not have access to a CO2 meter and so according to the information I have found, I should set the idle to about 750 and turn the mixture until I get the highest engine speed, adjust the idle again and repeat until it's correct. I've tried to do this and all I've succeeded in doing is making it idle at 1500 and I think, run too rich (the idle is erratic; hunting and if I stall the car it floods, it's also heavy on fuel).
No combination of the two screws gives a satisfactory idle ie where it doesn't cut out out and then fail to start without difficulty. Before all of the problems started the idle was about 1000, but the engine would often cut out. It was, however, not a problem to start again.
Incidentally the mileage is about 150k, so I presume a degree of higher than normal idle and hunting is to be expected.
Turning the mixture screw in (clockwise) is said to reduce CO2 - is that making it richer or leaner? Really I could do with an explanation of how to start from scratch to re-tune the carb, as I seem to be going around in circles. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.
