Hi all,
After the celebrations and much relief in finally sorting out the cold start problem and installing a manual preheat system in my partners 405TD, the bl**dy thing has developed another starting problem.
About a week before Christmas, after 4 weeks of perfect starting and running since I installed the manual preheat system, the car took 20 minutes to start one morning, but once it did, it was fine for the rest of day in its general running and subsequent starting that day.
I put it down to just one of those things, but the other half also said the coolant level light had also come on, which I found strange and dismissed as nothing to do with the bad starting.
Anyway, I checked the car over, made sure the glow plugs were still fine and glowing which they were, checked the coolant, which seemed low but at least it had coolant in it still.
Anyway the following day the car started fine from cold, and again was fine for most of the xmas period until 27th when it played up again taking around 20 mins for it to finally fire up, but this time no coolant level warning light.
During the time it struggles, its cranking and has the odd splutter as if its fired but then just carries on cranking, then we sit and wait for about 2-3 mins start again and it gets sooner when the firing begins to happen.
Then after about 3-4 times (20 mins), everytime using the pre-heat system she finally fires and runs.
People I've spoken to have suggested its the head gasket because the compression is all mucked up and its making starting it very hard. But surely this would hinder starting all the time not just the odd day when it fancy's being a right b*tch - LOL
Yesterday (30th) the car wouldnt start at all, so the problem seems to be getting a little worst.
Problem is once it does start, she's normally fine for a few days before it comes back to haunt us again.
She starts fine when towed or bumped, obviously using the pre-heat as well
I've whacked in some of this head, block, overall coolant sealant which a few mechanics have claimed to me are very good temp fixes, so Im waiting to see the results of that, but not holding my breath.
I've double checked the glow plugs, they're in still good condition, my pre-heat system checks out with a multimeter, I've changed the fuel filter and bled the fuel pump.
Please see my other posts in this forum about my initial COLD START problem for more info.
Hope somebody can help me diagnose this new more irritating problem.
Thanks for reading, all info will be much appreciated.
Happy New Year,
Shaun
