Hi all,
Carrying on from my other posts about the 405 having 4 months nearly of starting problems, I believe I've finally found the route of the current problem.
The fuel injector pump is leaking fuel from where the control lever (throttle lever) is connected to the shaft that goes into the pump.
I've been quoted £70 + VAT at a diesel specialists, but am interested in whether I can do it myself, as usually these seal kits are very cheap, its just the labour on changing them.
So basically does anyone know whether this is purely a expert only job with special tools and testing kit, or simply a case of taking off control lever and replacing old for new and a away we (obviously not quite that straight forward).
I wanna save as much money as possible, as Saturday morning we bump started her, and although we knew it had a slow coolant leak somewhere, I wasnt expecting the radiator to suddenly decide it wanted to completely blow and empty its entire content onto the road, so now i've gotta stick a new radiator in her aswell, although this now means the slight threat of the head gasket has gone has diminished because the coolant loss can be put down to the radiator!!
Look forward to your replies,
Many thanks,
Shaun

Much of the labour is in preparation before dismantling. The pump and surrounding area must be squeaky clean before the pump top is removed. The slightest particle of dust getting inside will ruin the pump in weeks. Ordering the correct seals requires a whole load of codes from the pump i/d plate. Will you know if you have the correct ones? Is the actual spindle also worn? Do you know how to readjust the pump levers when it is all reassembled?
Actually, £70 is not a bad price for this precision work, and specialist will have the correct parts in stock. However, if you understand the concept of engineering clean room conditions then have a go. The worst that can happen is you need to replace the pump and reset the injection timing at a later date.
You may possibly negotiate a better price by throughly cleaning the work area first. Worth a try.
Have fun, Donaldiesel
