my 405 td style on an "m" reg 152,000. all is well but sumtimes when i try and start it all the lights come on but it is dead and can only be started by bump starting.
i'm sure it is something to do with the starter motor has anyone got any ideas?

If you're on the original motor with 152kmls, then it's getting on a bit. Do you get anything at all when turning the key? Not even a basic click?
If you know where the starter motor is, try and hit it a few times with a hammer or something a bit heavy. Then try to start your engine. If it does then your starter motor coals are sticking. Could go on for a while and eventually return to life by itself(happened to me on my 305) but better get repaired/replaced.

Under the bonnet, low down on the right. You will see the heavy battery cables going to it. Yes, it is a good idea to clean the contacts to the solenoid on top of the starter motor. Corroded contacts can easilly cause intermittent faults like this. Donaldiesel

Hi, I have the same problem with my K reg 405GLD. Turn key to stage 2, wait for glow light to go out then nothing - no ignition, no clicking noise. At the moment I carry a long screwdriver with me, leave ignition at stage 2 and short out starter to get it into life. There's a few sparks but not too bad. Not a great solution I know but it happens so rarely, it does me fine. not worked on Turbo D so not sure if it's that easy to do there.
