Can anyone give me an idea what the mpg should be at 70mph on a flat road. Thought I should be getting more than 34. Also at 30 mph only getting mid to high 20s.
This seems a bit low for an economical diesel. - Figures given are with only driver and nothing else. Had a service 2k ago. Where should I be looking to improve these figures.
Thanks for any advice

Parkers say 47mpg, but that going to be combined for a 406 HDi 90 LX Estate. Things that could be dragging you down are incorrect tyres presures - aftermarket/alloy wheels with bigger profiles, poor injector spray pattern, air intake problem, carrying luggage! etc and of course an unsympathetic driving style.

Thanks for the reply 504, going by the list I can rule all all but the spray pattern. Is it a case of replacing the injectors or can they be cleaned.

HDi injectors are very expensive, so your option is really to either remove them and take them along to a Bosch Diesel centre for resetting. You could however firstly try an Italian decoke.

it is where you drive somewhere and rev the car hard (possibly till it reaches the limiter in the fuel pump) in second or third gear. It is remarkably good at cleaning out the engine and exhaust. Just Make Sure your Cambelt is in good nick, and you trust it first. Works for the MOT every time. ;D

Yeah GRD has got the idea. My old 106D used to go heaps better after its bi-monthly treatment. Just used to bring the revs up slowly in second gear until the fuel pump cuts out and then pump the accellerator on and off taking on and off the rev limitor, keeping a close eye on the exhaust smoke until it clears. Used to work a treat. HDi engines though don't work quite the same as it is electronically managed so there isnt a rev limitor on the fuel pump, its all done by the ECU but the same effect. This is also blow out any backlog of poop from the exhaust making it flow a little better too. I wouldnt say do this like an MOT test though with the engine not being under any load. You could try either bunging in a bottle of injector clear as well a few miles before, or even a gallon of unleaded petrol, as this desolve the tarnish off the end of the injectors. Petrol can be added to diesel safely to prevent waxing of diesel in cold weather, in measured amounts!

that explains what I have been doing better to me. I meant that I decoke the car on the way to the MOT test, and then it sails through the emmissions.

I do that to our 405 TD at least once a month. It saves that embarrassing puff of soot that appears out the exhaust when you floor it to overtake something.

Thanks for the replies guys, will give it a try. Find a long straight road and give it a blast. Hopefully will do the trick.
