I just bought a 97 phase 1 d-turbo recently. The car was cheap but had not been looked after so it needs a bit of tidying up which I don't mind but when I was looking under the rear end I noticed that the drivers side rear wheel was all worn and smooth! The wheel has been rubbing on the arch liner. I have had a few of these cars in the past but never heard about the rear axles giving trouble.
History over, now what to do. I have been told that replacing the bearings in the axle is a nightmare? Anybody carried this repair out? If I buy a secondhand axle I will be taking a chance so would rather repair it . Any help would be great.

Hi,To overhaul it will be very expensive,by your discription the bearings will be "rusty dust" and the axle cross tube will be damaged so will not accept new bearings. So I would expect this job to require a whole new cross tube and one poss` two radius arm tubes. This is a specialist job for a good Pug` Tech`[£750-£850??].The tube may overhaul but you do not know untill its in bits.I would look out for a second hand axle complete. To change it is simple, six nuts, two cables,a brake pipe and its on the floor.Yes you are taking a chance, look very carefully at the seal between the tube and the radius arm,[look at yours and you will see what I mean].If its clean and the arm is "springy" it may be ok.
