well I have always admired the 406 and last week I bought one a 2002 110hdi LX certainly a very nice and relaxing ride big improvement on my old audi80.I diliberated much about this and did a lot of reading on the model before hand. I am old enough to remember the old rust buckets from the seventies so had to think hard and a low milage one took some serious finding in good condition (looked at one with 200000 on the clock and its still drove well. recent figures show the pug range second only to honda for reliability but on reading some of the nightmare stories on this forum they have unsettled me somewhat so come guys you have all got one tell me what you really think good or bad I see maybe 30/50 pugs a day on the road in my job so they can`t all be bad? certainly like the 50mpg and that hdi engine really performs.

Welcome Jimmi. Glad you like your 406. Which surveys have you been reading!! As far as I was aware the only consistent thing about recent Pugs has been their shocking reliability and the company's continual prescence right at the bottom of all the reliability charts. Often beaten only by Citroen! Those old rust buckets you seem to remember are still happily chugging around Australia, Africa, South America and even parts of England!
Still it's not all bad. The 406 is a good car and yours should have had al it's little problems ironed out so good maintainance and regular care should see you good fot years to come. The Hdi engines continue the Peugeot tradition of great diesel engines.
Despite the problems we all love our Pugs, which have so much more character than other marques, so welcome aboard!

hmm, tbh, the modern pug reliability reputation is pretty much unjustified in my opinion... I put something like 30000 miles on a 1.4 16v petrol 206 in around 14-15 months (poor car is currently resting while i play with older pugs!) and there was exactly one problem: the oil filler cap vanished around 6000 miles. Messy, but not a problem. I know lots of other people with similar cars, none of which get an easy life (including the dreaded HDi's) who never have had any trouble. Maybe it's your shocking Southern dealers?

hi there! good choice
personally i've found peugeots to be the most reliable ever, i had a 205 1.1 hatch which i couldn't kill at all! - crashed it (although it was still 205tref's when i did this!), blew it up, let the AA break it etc. and it still did a 40 mile a day commute with no real problems!
it finally got scrapped when it was left standing for a few weeks and needed the brakes attending to... and i had no money
super pugs!!!

well 9 weeks down the line and just one concern, is it me are is the 406 gearbox a little snappy!! is there a sync between 1st and 2nd?? cos it notchy going in occasionally..... do hope its a clutch bleed job and not an impending gearbox thing love the car otherwise particularly how it seems to run forever on a gallon of diesel with the performance of a petrol car
