well ive picked her up and she is even better than the pictures, and the good news is the head gasket hadn't gone after all, the problem was that there was some little pin holes in the radiator which was cousing it to over heat but thats sorted now, though the light in the car saying that its over heating still keeps coming on, with the stop light and the diagnostic light but hubby thinks it might either have a dodgy sensor or it might need resetting .any one got any ideas on this, mot is booked for wednesday morning.

Hi Dawn! Welcome to the boards! It certainly looks like you have a good car for the cash ;D I wouldn't be too upset about the headset... do get the head checked to make sure it's still straight, (this can be done with a 600mm steel ruler as a straight edge if in a hurry/late at night or else you can take it to your local specialist), and do refit with new head bolts - the old ones are not really suitable for reuse, although you could if you're desperate. If you really want to be sure you could get the head ultra-sonically crack tested while you're at it, but on a TU that's probably overkill A head gasket set should cost about £15-20 (closer to the low end) and a set of bolts around the same. If your hubby is handy, it should be quite feasible to do the job on the drive. Don't be fooled into thinking that it'll be cheaper to buy odd gaskets seperately - by the time you track down all the odd bits you'll have spent twice the price. If you don't have a H@ynes guide yet, the Citroen AX book is actually better for many bits of 205, as it actually bothers to give you things like torque wrench settings for everything you need... Ideally you want a second hand one of both... ;D It's a good chance to check an awful lot of things, and certainly the valve stem oil seals are notorious for rotting through on cars with these engines, which leads to smoke that makes it look like you've blown the engine - ours does this at the moment and cos i'm sick of it i'm having the head off this week to sort this. You should get a set of valve stem seals in with your engine gasket set. Let us know how you go!

up to now, head gasket set is ordered and on its way , the headbolts are being pick up on friday along with a new cam belt,(we found them cheeper else were) we did the track rod ends at the weekend, and hubby is picking up the new spark plugs and alt belt after work today, so far so good ;D oh and it looks like the head gasket had only just gone , the head is ok, ;D

cool... glad to hear it!
also slightly embarrased to see that i'd pretty much repeated 104ZS's answer word for word... i honestly typed it before i saw this in tech queries!
good to hear your car is getting back together, unfortunately it's not such a good deal as it seemed, but it'll be a great car when you've done!
I'm just cursing the weather cos I've taken time off work to sort my own 205 and it's rained solidly for the last two days...

I'm cursing the weather to, all my parts are turning up and look at the bl**dy weather my poor hubby is outside doing some more to the car as I'm writing this. ;)and its all dark and wet, he as also been and got me some more wax and cloths because he had used the ones that i got , but the weather has stopped me being able to go out and give her a good wash and wax.
