We have a 2004 petrol 1.6 16v 307 Se whch we bought used over a year ago and its been great. This engine is smooth and much less obtrusive than the diesels as there are fewer resonance problems.
So far the electrics have been without fault and after 35K miles the car still feels taught.
We mainly do shorter trips with this car and in winter it warms up much faster than our diesel without the terrible clatter.
Don't get me wrong I have and have had many diesels before and for high mileage and long runs they are fine but I feel that today's diesels are more troublesome than the petrols due to the complex electronic managment system that early diesels did not have.
We also had a 206gti with the 2.0L Petrol engine which was very reliable and a lot of fun.
With a used car it is pot luck as you don't know how its been driven or looked after. Saying that I have seen some new cars on trade plates being thrashed up and down the motorway being delivered by some mindless drivers to unsuspecting keen new owners.
In a nut shell the 307 Petrols are as good as the Diesels if not better providing the car has not been abused and serviced by low grade mechanics.
Our 307 has been a comfortable and a relaible second family car thats pretty much tackled everything. I am still surprised how much can fit in. One of our friends bought an Audi A3 sportback and has had nothing but problems and its smaller in the back than the 307 and cost 20K more and has the same 4* Crash rating. What more can I say.....
