Hi i picked up my 405 diesel today (£250) with 100000 on the clock.
I have a few questions 1 how many miles should i expect from a tank 2 any problems i should keep my eye out for 3 Is there any info available on jobs such as timing belt change or should i just get a haynes
I have to admit the acceleration leaves alot to be desired having just left an evo II but as im now working 500 miles from home im looking forward to the slash in travelling costs (£160 round trip in the evo)

Welcome aboard.
I think you will find that your new car does a few more miles to the gallon than the evo. Even if they are slightly less exciting miles!
A 405 diesel should get you a good 50mpg unless you retain your right foot habits. But even then you should do arond 40mpg! Pretty soon you will be quids in!!
DIY servicing should be pretty routine, a haynes manual will cover the basics The club (CPUK) have the Peugeot workshop manuals for your car, but you'l have to join to loan them from the library!!

Hi welcome to CPUK forum. The 405 is a good work horse, you don't mention which diesel version you have. There are three main engine variations, 1769cc turbo, 1905cc either turbo or normally asperated.
The engine type for all three is XUD, which first saw English markets within the Talbot Horizon, followed by Citroen BX, and quickly the 205/305/309 ranges which ran alongside the Horizon until it was discontinued.
The XUD motor has been used in most Peugeot/Citroen vehicles before the DW and HDI new generation engines came along. You will also find it under the bonnets of Rover 218, Honda Accord (france), FSO pickup to name a few.
OK - so what to check and do. The basics, always change the oil & filter at 6000 mile intervals, using a diesel specific oil, Comma is £9 in Wilkinsons.
The coolant should be changed every 2 years, but if you change over to the "green" coloured ready mixed you can run to 4 years, but no longer. XUD engines can get cooling problems, so do check the cooling fans on the radiator are working. Allow the engine to run when hot and make sure they are cutting in and out. Regularly check your coolant level. XUD's can and will blow the head gasket if its low and ignored. warping the cylinder head. Check the oil for signs of water. When changing coolant, its really important on these to make sure no air remains in the system, a header tank is required, to be safe.
Don't panic too much if the engine is a little oily, but make sure you check the cambelt is dry. These engines can weep oil from the crank and cam with age. The covers can be an interesting battle to get on and off, but they are not very expensive if you bust them and most dealers seem to have them in stock!
Don't ignore the fuel filter, change it about 15,000 miles. Depending on the age of the engine it may be a simple screw on cartridge, or sandwiched between a housing, or even inside a plastic container. Bleeding the engine afterwards can either be a pig or a doddle! On that note if this is your first diesel, dont run out of fuel or you will need to bleed the fuel injection.
If you dont have a Peugeot or reputable garage's receipt for a cambelt change, book it straight in to be done. Peugeot parts branded belts are said to be better than you Halfords diy etc brands.
405's like a lot of other cars can get the odd electrical gremlin, and the trim can drop off. Seeing as you already have 100k on the clock bits dropping off may have been well stuck back by now.
If the engine is smokey, then a good dose of diesel specific injector cleaner should help, or for £117.50 your local Lucas centre will recondition them, or a little more if they so the removal/fitting work etc.
At 100k the shock absorbers may be a bit tired, but are not too expensive. Like most cars if you are a DIY'r then it will be very cheap to run. Parts can be bought from all motor factors, and stores like German Sweedish and French or the net without problem and will be less than main dealer prices. Now this is an older car, you will have lots of parts in breakers yards, also engines in BX etc.
