Hello i'm new to this forum and i was looking for some help with engins because im looking 2 put a 306 GTI6 engin into a 205 GTI 1.6 the reason is my friend has just crashed 306. I was thinking i could take the engin out of the 306 because he dint hit the front of the car and said i could have it for a small fee. i was wounding how hard it is 2 do. Thanks

Unless your a very clever DIY mechanic, think again. This is a major conversion, cooling, electrics,ECU,exhaust etc etc. Most conversions use the 405 MI16 engine and only then if its going in a 1.9 GTI as they have bigger driveshafts and hubs, oilcooler, better brakes etc

Its actually not much more difficult than using an mi16 engine. the 6 uses the same mounts although using an early escort top mount rubber will help with clearance to the master cylinder. Electrical wise. make sure the ecu is unplugged while the 306 is running to prevent it getting locked.remove the full loom as much as you can and use the 6 ecu.basically use as much of the 306 electrics as you can.
cooling is again very simple. 1.6 gti's are used just as much as 1.9's. and are just as good.most prefer the rear drums from the 1.6 as they are more efficient. the oil cooler will come from the 6 so no wories there.
if you want a more indepth write up let me know but it is just as simple as an mi conversion.dont be put off.

to be fair if you know nothing about cars and think you can do it over the weekend then forget about it. if your half decent and have got a month to do it then have a bash but make sure the engines ok before you fit it and fit new cambelts water pump ect before hand as theres not much room left when its in, also get everything off the doner car ie all the looms and sensors ect. if you get all that then its not to bad. youll send a bit of time modding parts to fit but youll have a quick car by the end of. ive done a few gti6 and mi16 conversions and there pretty much the same. i agree with oldpug though and use 1.9 driveshafts and hubs ect as there stronger

Thanks for all the help. i am gunnner tackle it my self becausei a little bit about changing engins. i swoped the engin over in my mini 1000 to a 1275 gt. yes i no a gti 6 is a lot more complex then a mini but not going to do a rush job. Ta yes but remember that mechanicals and electricals are very different things. An engine swap in a mini involves virtually no electrics while sticking a 6 motor in a 205 means messing with looms, ecu's air flow sensors injection set ups and god knows what else. A completely different level of complexity. There's a lot more knowledge out there regarding putting Mi16 motors into 205's. You could also consider junking the injection and running the car on carbs or throttle bodies. On the other hand most Mi16 motors are a bit old now while a 6 will be much newer. Both would need a full rebuild before going in though or you could be pulling it straight out to do a head gasket or worse.
