i just got a peugeot 205 1.8 diesel this afternoon for a very good price, all its needs is a new alternator belt as the old one snapped, i've had a look and someones managed to bend the front tow hook up so its horrizontal instead of vertical and is pushing the radiator pipe accross meaning a circlip is rubbing on the belt which is why i think it snapped, it came with a full tank of diesel worth more than i paid for the car though so cant complain! am going to bend it back one night this week fit the new belt and see how it goes!
I'm going to give it a bit of a service, anything inparticular i should be looking at on one of these cars or just normal case of oil change, drain and flush cooling system etc?

Nice one!! You probably paid less than the current scrap value! XUD engine has iron block and alloy head. It is intolerant of overheating, so make sure cooling system is up to the job. Replace any dodgy hoses, flush & refill with new antifreeze mix, and never run with just water in. Open the three bleed screws when refilling to avoid air locks. When was the cam belt last changed? If you don't know, get it changed anyway. Donaldiesel

I'm pretty sure i did pay less than current scrap value, i paid £1!!!! I'm planning on giving it a full service later in the week with an oil change and cooling system flush.
You say to never run it with water, my normal technique is to empty the system, let a hose pipe run through the radiator untill its running clean then fill the system up with water, let it run untill hot, empty it, fill it up and run it for a day with just water, then empty it and fill with water and antifreeze, it shouldnt cause a problem running with just water for a day should it? Whereabouts are the three bleed screws?

Hi Oli, That's ok. Good idea to give cooling system a through flush. Just make sure you have antifreeze mix in for normal service and don't dilute later by topping up with plain water. There are two bleed screws on the thermostat housing and one on the upper heater pipe close to the bulkhead. Turn the heater control to hot when filling. You may need to bleed several times to get all the air out. Hope this helps. Regards, Donaldiesel
