I went to see the doctor last week, and to cut a long story short my left knee is knackered and I need an auto...
I fell a strong attraction towards an earlyish 607 2.2 HDI auto.... probably because I think that it would be good company for my 604.
Looking at autotrader I reckon £4000 will get be a 51 plate with reasonable mileage and leather seats.
I'm thinking that the burgundy colour looks nice but red cars always fade, and I don't like black, so that leaves silver or two shades of blue?
Also the black leather is going to look a bit dark inside and the only other choice looks like grey leather which would made the interior a bit brighter. There doesn't seem to be a tan leather option.
I'm not in a huge hurry and can wait to find the right car.
I'm guessing that 607 hdi auto is going to do maybe 36 to 37 mpg? I currently get about 38mpg from our 806 HDI manual. I don't think that a 407 HDI auto will do any better and would cost more, and a 406 is not going to have tiptronic. A 51 or very early 02 will be in my price range and avoid the new road tax thing. I suppose I'll be looking at 75000 miles or so, which is much less that the 195000 that my 806 has, and that's in rude health.
Are there any issues that I should be looking out for? Is my plan reasonable?
The engines are bomb proof (injection system excepted) but what about the transmission? what's the cambelt change interval for a 607?

Modern paint compunds are very good and stable, especially if it's looked after in a halfway decent manner, so don't be put off the burdundy if you really like it.
I manage low 40's mpg overall in my manual 407 2.2 petrol if driven with care, though this quickly plummets if you toe it a bit, so i should think high 30's, low 40's should be achievable on the 607, even with a slushmatic, as there's not much weight difference twixt the 2.

anyone know what the cambelt change interval is on these cars? there seem to be a few with 70k to 75k for sale, maybe people are selling them to avoid the 10 hour labour charge....

I think you're being a wee bit optimistic there. We looked at a few 607 diesels and according to their computers they'd all averaged 29/30 mpg. Ask the nice salesman chappie to give you the keys and check for yourself. Issues? The electrics. d**n fine cars though, we're happy with ours except it's gutless (only a petrol 2.0) but our previous 2.2 petrol was great, but only averaged about 22mpg. The 2.2 diesels seem livelier than the 2.0 petrol. Happy hunting! Mike.

i had a drive in a 607 2.2 hdi auto today this one was a 53 with veloor interior, but i wanted to see what it's like to drive it was smaller than I expected, at least on back seat width. 3 looks like it might be a squeeze this one had the dark grey dash and seats, and it didn't look as dreary as I expected. the wood trim in the dash looks better in real life that in photos. I guess that black leather might be more practical than cream as well...
the car was certainly very refined, and plenty quick enough for me, and very comfortable, but the brakes needed a real shove, they didn't seem to have much bite to them, and the steering initially felt a bit heavy too, but after a few minutes I didn't really notice it anymore
the tiptronic feature is a total con. i got the car in fourth gear at 50mph, and put it in manual mode, then I pressed the accelerator to go up a hill, which the engine would definitly have the torque for. the next thing I new I was in 2nd ! the manual mode doesn't seem very manual...
searching on autotrader for similar money the choices seem to be 607 hdi auto Rover 75 diesel auto 406 2.0 hdi auto Volvo S60 D5 auto vectra DTi auto octavia TDI auto
I can't quite face the 75, no sure why, and I don't much like Vauxhalls either (my sister's Astra DTI has been troublesome and the red paint faded badly)
I suspect the 406 might actually drive more nicely, after all the 406 was famous for driving well, but less toys for the same money.
I drove an octavia years ago, and I remember that it drove really nicely.
The volvo has a 5 cylinder engine. mmm but is a bit smaller I think, and it will cost a bit more
I'm a bit undecided on the virtues of the 607

I've never been too sure about the looks of the 607. The overhangs look too big front and rear. No doubt it is a comfy old barge (big pugs always are).
What's the depreciation like on a Citroen C6. A year old one should be down to £2.47 by now. Now they do look nice. Very nice.

I got my 607. It's a silver blue 2001 with 65000 miles, veloor interior, and the optional 17 inch alloys (including the spare). List of faults found so far. No evidence of any maintenance to the particulate filter, so it will need a fluid refill and pressure wash of the filter. Error warning of one tyre pressure sensor not present. One wheel and the spare seem to have ordinary valves so I'm not sure why it isn't reporting two not present. Some lines missing on the LCD trip/nav/phone screen (it's monochrome not colour). Apparently this is a common fault, but it cost £600 for a new one.... I think I'll have to write to Peugeot UK about this because that's a ridiculous price. Also I'll hopefully find a used one or even repair the one I have. Both ashtray doors won't stay closed. The overall condition is great for an eight year old car, and it really is nice to drive, if a bit big in city streets. the car:-

I fixed a few things already.
Unjammed the CD changer cartridge. Fixed a broken interior light button. Changed the broken rear ashtray (got one cheap on ebay). Climate control panel lights up now (four new bulbs). Fixed the crazy auto wipers (by putting rain-ex on the windscreen).
I also gouged one of the fancy wheels already :-( the spokes stick out further than the edge of the tyre, so if you go too near to an old style kerb (like in central London) the top of the kerb hits one or more wheel spokes. I'll have to learn how to respray the wheels myself I think.
