(or Brake Compensator Valve) My 405 failed it's MoT on Saturday. One of the failings was the above has come loose. Possibily broken beyond repair - but I have yet to check it. I've found a new one on ebay (250215134845) but was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere that does re-con ones, or if I could risk getting one from a scrap yard?

this is a safety item so only fit a O/E new part.Try Euro and GSF for prices then ask your main dealer.

Ive found one on Eurocarparts for £64 made by ATE. Would this be ok or does it need to be a genuine Peugeot item?

I managed to take a look at the valve last night. The sprung rod has detached itself from the bracket on the trailing arm. The valve itself looks a bit rusty but not broken or loose.
Can I just re-attach the sprung rod to it's bracket?
Is there a way of testing the valve to make sure it's functioning correctly?

an ATE one will be fine but IIRC is cheaper at GSF, but refitting it is better still.
Mine went, so i stripped it, cleaned it and locked it in the 'open' position so the fluid was always going to the rear wheels. again, IIRC correctly, if the spring breaks (which they regularly do cos they corrode easily), the lever opens to the default 'open' and brake fluid is passed to the rear brakes, so it isn't actually safety critical and if the brakes are in otherwise good condition the rear brake effort should still be good. Were it the other way round and it had all corroded or gummed closed then I could see why it would fail.

I work for a Peugeot in a dealership for 25 years and these used to go all the time back in the days of the 405.
The genuine part is going to be more (that stands to reason)but you can take it or leave it
If you wanted a part number here it is 486147

Thanks for all the advice. In the end I opted to get the work done at a local garage after an MoT found a few other things wrong with my car: N/S/R brake recording little or no effort N/S/R parking brake no effort (handbrake cable) O/S/R parking brake no effort (handbrake cable) O/S/F lower wishbone rubber excessive movement After £414 (£100 of that being a new brake load sensing valve which broke apart when they were takig it off!) including a new MoT & she is back on the road again!
