When I noticed the driver side headlight on my F reg 205 XR wasn't working I assumed I just needed a new bulb. I was surprised to see the bulb had shattered rather than just blown. I guessed I'd hit a stone or something because the lens was slightly damaged, so I replaced the bulb. That lasted just one day.
I removed the new bulb and found that had also shattered and so had the side light bulb too. Having checked the wires in the immediate vicinity weren't chaffed or anything else looked amiss, I replaced both the main bulb and side light bulb again. The replacement headlight bulb lasted 2 days and has gone again but the side light bulb has stayed with me this time.
Any ideas why this is happening and why so catastrophically rather than just blowing? My lens is now rattling full of broken glass!

OK, in the absence of any pearls of wisdom from those much more in the know than I, I'm going to work on the assumption this is a dodgy earth problem. The earthing wire from the three point connector disappears off into some trunking and short of taking it all apart I have no idea where it earths. Please can someone point me in the right direction?

the earth blocks for the lights are underneath them, i would maybe sugest an over voltage, out of intrest measure the charge rate maybe giving to much volyage and blowing, had a few of them do this

i'd second frank's over-voltage suggestion, but also suggest checking out the regulator on the alternator. Every 205 I've had has started blowing bulbs as an early symptom of the voltage reg being on the way out. Obviously the final evidence is when you no longer have electrolyte in you r battery... The voltage reg can be replaced as easily as the brushes. If your local motor factor tries to tell you it can't be or asks for much more than £25 you need to find a new shop, probably without big chrome exhausts and large bore silicone tubing on display. Heinz will tell you what the alternator's output should be. If it's much more than that you have a problem. The earth blocks frank mentions are tricky to get at while the light is in the car, and are basically spade connectors onto the bodywork (bit more to tehm than that but conceptually). as standard they're encased in those nasty yellowed plastic bags tht are probably brittle by now. You may find corrosion down there. This is serious for the correct functioning of the entire electical system. I may have some pics of tackling this on one of the CJ's a couple of years ago if you are interested. If you alter the speed of the fan do the lights get dimmer/brighter?
