Apologies - 1 more query re my '97 406 TD. The previous owner had the car for years and was a mechanic (or was that maniac?). I'm pretty sure / hopeful that he changed the cambelt at some point but obviously nothing in the service history. Am I right in thinking there's not way of telling it's condition and that I should just have it replaced? I understand it's not a cheap / easy job on the diesels - does anyone have a rough idea as to how much?? Cheers

You are right in saying that there is no way to check if it has been done. If you don't have the evidence of when it was changed then I would change it straight away. Not sure on the price as I did the last one on my 205 myself, although it was a pain of a job to do. (No space to work in along the side of the engine)

you should be able to check condition of cambelt by removing timing belt cover. if you do change cambelt i would recommend doing water pump also

yes, get the cambelt changed if you are unsure of it's vintage, and the waterpump. i have known of cambelt failure due to seized waterpumps - even if the cambelt is recent.

A used belt just looks like an old belt but if it fails it will cost you £1500 + !!?? so replace it and don't cut costs as it defeats the object.A small independent should charge about £150+ labour,as said above be prepared to replace the water pump, extra 1/2hr labour + £30 part and a/freeze,and possible tensioner pully. The auxiliary belt has to be removed to do the job so fit a new one, £16.So,all in all if you get it done by a professional budget for about £250-£275 + VAT?
