There's a hum and rhythmic click coming from the passenger footwell on my '98 406 TD. I'm guessing it has something to do with the heating / aircon (although I'm not sure why)? Does it indicate a problem or should I just get used to it (heating works fine, aircon - who cares!)

Your correct, its the heater flap motor. Its a standing on your head job and if I remember right they are the best part of £100.So if every thing works ok,(it will click like that for ever and a day) live with it and turn the CD up!

Cheers for the advice. I'll learn to live with it!

this is genrealy the recirculation motor.it is fitted behide the glovebox and is well hidden.locate the wiring connection 4ins below and disconnect.this stops the noise and does not effect other climate systems .part costs about £85

Had this on a 405 last year. Instead of living with it, I disconnected it so that there's now no way to stop air coming in from outside. As the air recirculation was hardly ever set to internal only, it doesn't make much difference unless going past a farmyard! Don't know if 406s are similar but maybe worth a thought.
