Hello. My '98 406 TD estate (130k miles) is getting increasingly smoky on start-up and now I can see smoke in the rear view mirror under harder acceleration. The smoke is black and I've added an injector treatment to the fuel but it doesn't seem to have made much difference. Is this probably the injectors? I've heard that if so this is an expensive job. Can anyone comment please? Cheers.

Normaly at that mileage the only expence would be 4 glow plugs, these old TD engines last for ever. Before you think of major work try a simple "clean up job". Add Forte engine flush to the oil,fit a new fuel filter and add Forte diesel treatment in the filter housing more in the tank, fit a new air filter, then give it a flat to the floor 20-30 mile thrashing. Then new oil and oil filter. You will not get Forte`s at parts shops or factors. The only way to find it is at The Good Garage Scheme.com the member nearest you will have some.It is magic stuff and really works.

Cheers oldpug - that was the answer I was hoping for (cheap solution!). Foot on the floor in my 406TD?? Might just about be able to break the speed limit (just)!

Yes - foot to the floor - I was introduced to this principle under the name of an "Italian De-coke" It works wonders up and down the motorway in third for half an hour just before the MOT test each year and straight through the emmisions well under the limit
