I think I need a new steering rack for my 04 807.
If so the part alone is £958.32 from a main dealer.
Has anyone had one replaced on an 807 or similar and/or know of a cheaper solution?

Hi Frank,
I hear a clunk and feel it through the steering wheel over certain potholes and speedbumps, which is getting more frequent.
I also have a very tight drive to reverse into on full lock and on adverse camber and live in London (speed bump city).
I had a volvo before and replaced the rack with a recon unit which lasted one year, so I am a bit paraniod when it comes to racks.
Having said that there is no noise or slippage at full lock which I had before on the volvo and a scirocco years back.

Check the rack is bolted firmly in place and isnn't moving.
Thn check ball joints, strut top mounts, ARB bushes, lower control arm bushes and the 101 other more likely causes of the knocking you describe.

if it's an 04 then you need an MOT some time in the next 12 months ask the MOT mechanic to find what's loose, as they have to check most of that stuff anyway as turbolag said there are many things that can cause suspension clunks the recon unit probably only lasted a year because it was recon, rather than because of the funny shape of your drive
